Monitor MRP Material Shortages in SAP S/4HANA Cloud
Use the Monitor Material Coverage app to review MRP coverage key figures, keep net and individual planning segments distinct, and investigate shortage situations in context.
MRP shortage monitoring is most useful when each result is read in its planning-segment context. In SAP S/4HANA Cloud, the app titled Monitor Material Coverage - Net and Individual Segments presents coverage key figures for the selected segment and filters. Use those results to identify where coverage needs investigation, then review the relevant planning situation before deciding what action to take.
Start with the planning segment
Open the app and establish the material and planning context for the review. Treat the net segment and each individual segment as separate review contexts: inspect the results for the segment you intend to assess, and record that context alongside any shortage you raise. The app presents results for the selected planning segment and filters, so changing the selection changes the scope of the review.
Use consistent filters when comparing a shortage across review sessions. Capture the material, selected segment, filter context, and the key figure that prompted follow-up. This makes it easier for another planner to reproduce the same view and understand what was observed.
Read coverage key figures together
The documented key figures include MRP Standard, Stock Days' Supply, Ordered Requirements, and Ordered Receipts. Read them as a group within the selected segment. A coverage concern is a reason to inspect the underlying planning situation; a single indicator alone does not establish which operational action is appropriate.
Stock Days' Supply is useful as a coverage signal in the displayed context. Ordered Requirements and Ordered Receipts add information about requirements and receipts represented in that same view. Compare the figures with the planning situation you are reviewing, and retain the segment and filter context when communicating a potential shortage.
For a broader explanation of reviewing coverage, see Review material coverage in SAP S/4HANA Cloud. Keep that review focused on the relevant segment rather than treating one segment's results as a substitute for another's.
Investigate a shortage signal
When a figure points to a possible shortage, first confirm that the material, segment, and filters match the question being investigated. Then review the displayed coverage key figures together and document which result prompted the follow-up. This keeps the handoff tied to a reproducible view instead of an isolated number.
Next, review the planning elements relevant to the material and segment in your operational process. If a planned order is part of the follow-up, coordinate its review with the responsible planner; manage planned orders in SAP S/4HANA Cloud covers that related task. The coverage signal identifies an area to investigate, while the appropriate response depends on the planning situation and local process.
Make shortage reviews repeatable
Use a short review record that captures the material, selected planning segment, filters, relevant key figures, and the follow-up owner. When the view is revisited, keep the same context or explicitly note what changed. This helps teams distinguish a changed planning situation from a changed selection.
Escalate a concern with enough context for another planner to reproduce the result: state the selected segment, filters, and the key figures that led to the review. Keeping net and individual segment findings separate makes the discussion more precise and supports consistent follow-up.
